Insert vs. full-frame replacement, explained

An insert (or pocket) replacement removes the old sash and installs a new complete window unit inside the existing frame. It's faster, less invasive, and cheaper — but it only works when the original frame and sill are dry, square, and structurally sound. You also lose an inch or two of glass area on each side, which is noticeable on smaller openings.

A full-frame replacement takes everything back to the rough opening. That's the right call when we find rot at the sill, evidence of past water intrusion, failed original flashing, or when the home is getting new siding anyway. Full-frame lets us insulate the cavity properly, install new flashing tape and a sill pan, and restore the full glass opening. It costs more, and on a leaking wall it's the only honest answer.

When you compare quotes, look for the brand and series name, the frame material, the exact glass package, whether it's insert or full-frame, whether exterior aluminum capping is included, and who handles interior trim and paint. Two quotes that don't spell those out aren't comparable at any price.
